Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Mini – 4K Thunderbolt interface, 12G-SDI and HDMI
UltraStudio 4K Mini is an external Thunderbolt 3 interface for capture and playback up to 4K DCI 60p: it captures 8 and 10-bit HDR up to 4K DCI 60p and 12-bit up to 4K DCI 30p. It combines 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0b, analog connections, a microphone input and an SD card reader in a small box.
What UltraStudio 4K Mini is for
It is designed for 4K editing and grading with a laptop or compact computer: capture from cameras and recorders, monitor over SDI and HDMI, and mount camera media directly with the SD card reader to start working immediately. With RS-422 control it also handles decks.
Connections
1 x 12G-SDI input, 2 x program and 1 x loop SDI outputs, HDMI 2.0b in and out, component or composite video input, 2 channels of balanced analog audio in and out on 1/4 inch jacks, XLR mic input with 48V phantom power, Black Burst or Tri-Sync reference, RS-422 port, USB-C, UHS-I and UHS-II SD card reader. Internal 100-240V power supply.
Connection and compatibility
It connects to a Thunderbolt 3 port and can charge a laptop with 45 W. It works on Mac, Windows and Linux with the Desktop Video driver, which includes Media Express, Disk Speed Test and the setup utility, and is compatible with the main editing, graphics and streaming software.
System requirements
You need a computer with a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port. Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 ports and the ports of Apple Silicon Macs work too; a USB-C port without Thunderbolt is not enough, and a USB4 port only if it is Thunderbolt 3 compatible. Operating systems: macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe or later, 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, Linux. The box includes a QR code to download the software: Desktop Video driver and Media Express and, on Mac and Windows, also Disk Speed Test, LiveKey and the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic Design does not state minimum processor, memory or graphics requirements: they depend on the software and the working format. Capturing in Ultra HD and 4K needs a fast enough disk, which you can check with the included Disk Speed Test.
Video formats by connection
12G-SDI (input and outputs): SD, HD up to 1080p60, 2K DCI, Ultra HD and 4K DCI up to 60p on a single cable; 8 and 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 in all formats, 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 up to 4K DCI 30p, 16 audio channels. 2160p50 and 60 need a 12G-SDI cable and device: a 6G-SDI device goes up to 2160p30, a 3G-SDI device up to 1080p60. Fill and key on the two SDI outputs up to 2160p30.
HDMI 2.0b (input and output): SD, HD up to 1080p60, Ultra HD and 4K DCI up to 60p, 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 at 8, 10 and 12 bit, 8 audio channels. Analog input: composite in SD only (NTSC and PAL), component in SD and HD. On all digital connections: Rec. 601, Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020, HDR with PQ and HLG.
UltraStudio 4K Mini or 4K Extreme 3?
UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 adds more SDI connections (quad link), 4-channel XLR audio and a PCI Express connection, for high end fixed suites. 4K Mini is the portable choice.
